Scattering Ashes?

Dealing with Ashes After a Funeral

For many families, arranging a meaningful way to say goodbye doesn’t always happen at the time of the funeral. It is entirely legal—and often deeply personal—to hold a memorial or “Celebration of Life” event weeks or even months later. These occasions can include the scattering of ashes and may be religious or non-religious. We can help plan the event and provide an officiant to lead it.

Scattering Ashes Options

Ashes may be scattered on land with the landowner’s permission. If it is your own land or garden, you may proceed at any time. For other locations, we’re happy to offer advice, seek permissions, and arrange a short service if desired.

Scattering ashes at sea or on a beach is generally allowed, provided it is not on private property. It’s best to follow Environment Agency guidelines—avoid water collection areas and remain courteous to other water users nearby. Biodegradable water urns are a thoughtful option, designed to float briefly before gently sinking and dispersing – we can provide these so please contact us to discuss.

Scattering by boat is also possible, subject to wind/sea conditions and any permissions required. Our team can take care of all arrangements, allowing families to focus on remembering their loved one. We are often asked to manage such outings which can be anything from a simple scattering, to a full cruise with food, refreshments, musicians and more.
