Direct Cremation
Whilst there has been a rise in the number of national firms offering ‘direct cremation’ this has always been available from local funeral directors too. by using a local independent funeral director you will be supported by someone in your local community and provided with full transparency.
What is Direct Cremation?
Direct cremation is nothing new – it simply means the person who died is taken to a crematorium on their own, with no mourners or service, and then returned as ashes to the family.
How does it work?
The deceased are taken into care by the funeral director, put in a coffin and then taken to be cremated. If this is done locally it will be at the nearest crematorium. National firms use a network of vans and have central facilities for processing cremations.
How much does it cost?
Our Direct Cremation package is an all in price of £1195 which includes all transport, paperwork, preparation, coffin and disbursements.
What are the Pros/Cons?
Whilst not for everyone, direct cremation is the cheapest and simplest way to deal with a loss.
You may wish to organise a celebration of life or wake for friends and family to attend once the ashes are returned.
The disadvantages are there is no service, no procession, no chance for family to pay their last respects or say goodbye.
Stay local
We carry out our direct cremations at East Devon Crematorium exclusively which means you know where your loved one is at all times.
We have had family members line the route that we take to the crematorium and on occasion taken our hearsette to the family home one last time.
If you are considering this funeral option then please consider using your local funeral director. We look after your loved one locally, and you can usually come and say goodbye before they take their final journey.
The arrangements for the cremation can be made at our offices in either Budleigh or Exmouth or we can come to you at home if it easier for you.
If you use a national firm all arrangements will be made by phone and email and your loved one will be transported and stored outside of Devon and you will not be able to see them at all.
